The annual Western Group of Motoring Writers PR Driving Day has been cancelled for 2020, writes Robin Roberts.

This tough decision to cancel the event scheduled for 3 June 2020 has been taken only after a lot of heart-searching in light of the very latest information from HM Government on the isolation protocols surrounding the current Coronavirus epidemic sweeping across the UK.

WGMW chairman Robin Roberts said, “It’s been a very hard decision to take in the 32nd year of the event, which has survived previous economic crisis, and with a number of early bookings as well.

“The automotive industry PRs have been our enthusiastic supporters for four decades and this globally unique event has a firm place in their diaries, the UK industry’s calendar and is the highlight of the group’s year and social calendar.”

However, with the Government stating its intention to review the isolation protocol every three weeks for possibly up to six months, the Western Group felt it could not confidently expect a lifting of the restrictions by 3 June or even by the end of summer 2020. Then it would face finding a date later in 2020 when car makers’ other planned or delayed events might be taking place meant it would not be able to secure a good turnout in a congested calendar.

Provisionally, WGMW DD2021 is being planned for 2 June 2021 and the group will be in touch with all those who have already booked into this year’s event and will keep the industry updated as necessary.
